Halloween got a big reveal at the September 2025 PlayStation State of Play, with an announcement that shows off horror icon Michael Myers and reveals a release date of September 8, 2026. Despite the excitement of seeing the classic movie monster starring in his own official video game, players will have to wait a while for the upcoming game in the historic Halloween franchise.
The original movie in John Carpenter’s Halloween horror franchise was first released in 1978, shocking audiences with an unstoppable killer whose legacy still endures to this day. A dozen more movies have followed, most recently with 2022’s Halloween Ends, and Michael Myers has been a popular addition to video games over the years as well, making recent appearances in a variety of games that range from Call of Duty to Fortnite.
Halloween Video Game Launch Date
- September 8, 2026
While the fall season is a great time for horror movies and their related video games, Halloween‘s grand reveal shows that it won’t be available to play until September 8, 2026, which is almost a full year away. The game, developed by IllFonic, will be presented in an asymmetrical multiplayer survival horror sandbox style, with one player taking on the role of the deadly killer and hunting down the others. Players also have the option to play as one of several civilian survivors working against the killer, but saving their own skins won’t be enough, as they’ll also be tasked with leading NPC civilians to a safe place and finding a working telephone so they can contact the police and, hopefully, put an end to Michael Myers’ murderous spree through their neighborhood.
While survivors will have some defenses that will keep the infamous killer at bay, they’ll still be at a severe disadvantage in a one-on-one situation. In addition to being hard to take down, killer players will have the ability to Shape Jump, becoming invisible to other players and NPCS. The shadowy, incorporeal form isn’t a common sight for movie fans, but IllFonic explains that it’s the game studio’s way of conveying how Micheal Myers set up kills by showing up at just the right place and time.
The impending arrival of Halloween could mean some changes for another asymmetrical horror title. There is concern among the fan base that Michael Myers may be removed from Dead by Daylight, which follows a similar gameplay premise to what is depicted in the preview trailer and images for the upcoming game from IllFonic. Hellraiser’s The Cenobite, also known as Pinhead, was taken out of Dead by Daylight‘s store earlier this year due to expiring licensing agreements, but there is no confirmation yet whether Michael Myers will meet the same fate following Halloween‘s launch.
